Board and Care Homes - What are They?

8/27/2024

I have an interesting topic this morning. I'd like to talk to you about Board and Care Facilities.
What are those? Well, I actually don't like the name, to be honest with you. They are also known as group homes, residential care homes, etcetera. In the state of California, you're going to find thousands of board and care facilities. Unless I'm wrong, and if someone listening to this can prove me wrong, I don't believe many states have a similar set up, and obviously the number that we find in California, of Board and Care.

Why the Podcast?

So folks, on this morning's episode, it’s just going to be me. I want to talk to you guys a little bit and really encourage you to listen to this episode and pass it on to friends and relatives.

Somebody asked me a couple days ago, “Why am I doing this podcast?” I thought about it and I've been working in this environment now for 17-18 years, started almost 20 years ago when all four of our parents got ill, and our life changed. We were, you know, probably that average family. Both of us working, and I had a long commute to work. My wife worked out of our house at that point. We had two kids, our son 11, our daughter, seven. They were involved in a lot of activities, sports, dance, plus all the homework- everything that kids of that age normally get involved with.

Well, we have a great conversation this morning with a great guest: Ailene Gerhardt. She's an independent board certified patient advocate. A certified senior advisor, a solo aging expert and founder of her national patient advocacy practice, Beacon Patient Solutions LLC. This expertise led in the fall of 2021 to the founding of the Navigating Solo Network, a national website network and online Clearing House featuring resources specifically for the solo ager. Are you there this morning, Ailene?
